December 7, 2024. Dick was a beloved husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Moore; he was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather and is survived by extended family and friends. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Elizabeth N. Moore (Betty); his daughter, Theresa Moore Heath; his son, Richard S. Moore Jr.; his granddaughter, Susan Heath Ouellette. Surviving grand children include Catherine E. Brown, Joseph S. Heath, Richard S. Moore III, John P. Moore, and Daniel T. Moore.
Captain Richard S. Moore was a native of Glendale, California. He attended both the University of Washington, Seattle, and the University of California at Los Angeles. He was commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve in June 1943 and accepted a commission in the U.S. Navy in 1945.
In addition to service in the Atlantic and Pacific during World War II, Captain Moore participated in actions of the U.S. Seventh Fleet during the Korean War when he was Executive Officer of the destroyer USS Erben (DD-631).
Captain Moore has commanded USS Chester T. O’Brian (DE-421), USS Joseph K. (DE-1030), USS Preston (DD795), USS William V. Pratt (DLG-13) and Destroyer Squadron 26. Before reporting as Chief of Staff to Commander Sixth Fleet, Captain Moore served as Chief of Staff to Commander U.S. Naval Forces, Vietnam and later as Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in the Mekong Delta (Commander Task Force 116). From 1972 to 1974 he served as Chief of Staff to Commander, U.S. Sixth Fleet.
Captain Moore has been awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with Combat V, the Air Medal with bronze star and three strike/flight awards, the Navy Commendation Medal, the National Order of Vietnam, the Cross of Gallanrty with Palm (Vietnam) and the Vietnamese Honor Medal, First Class.
Captain Moore is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and has attended the Naval War College. Ashore he has served in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, the Bureau of Naval Personnel, and on the Joint Staff in Washington.
After retirement from the Navy Captain Moore served as Administrative Director of the DAR in a General Manager of the association of Flight Attendants.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 - 8 pm, Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at Demaine Funeral Home, 10565 Main Street, Fairfax, VA, 22030. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered from St Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, 12409 Henderson Rd., Clifton, VA 20124 on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at 11 am. Interment will follow at Clifton cemetery.
