John is survived by his wife, of 56 years, Donna Jenkins, son John Jenkins Jr (Heather), son Jason Jenkins (Ken Self), grandchildren Brooke and Garrett, brother James Jenkins (Donna), sister Mary McHugh, sister Donna Maloney . John was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and brother who’s unconditional love of family will be his lasting legacy.
Committed to family and community John worked with Ford Motor Company prior to becoming a police officer for Washington D.C Metropolitan Police Department where he served in the 11th precinct and communications from Dec 1963 to Nov 1971. After injury, he was retired from the Metropolitan Police in 1971. He began his career with the Washington Redskins as a special assistant to head coach George Allen and transitioned into the role of Head Grounds Keeper at the practice facilities in Herndon and Ashburn VA. where he worked for 28 yrs. He took great pride in his contribution to the teams achievements including winning 3 Superbowls and 1 NFC championship. During John’s down time he enjoyed coaching his son’s in football and baseball and became a fixture in the local community where he was recognized by players for decades after coaching them.
John was a member of several organizations. A lifelong member of the Sons of the American Legion he served as Commander and Treasurer. He was a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus at St. Leo’s Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police - Lodge 1, Association of Retired Police Officers Washington D.C., and was a member of Centreville Moose for many years.
For those family members and hometown friends, who can’t make it to Fairfax, there will be Memorial service at Queen of Peace Church in Patton, PA. on August 20th 11am.
A visitation for John will be held Monday, June 20, 2022 at 12:00 PM at Demaine Fairfax Funeral Home, 10565 Main St, Fairfax, Virginia 22030, followed by a celebration of life at 1:30 PM.
Following the service a reception will be held at 2PM at the American Legion Post 177 in Fairfax, VA.
