James “Jim” Spangler was first and foremost a man who treasured his wife and family. Proud to rise from humble beginnings to achieve success and fulfilment in his business and hobbies, Jim could never abide the suffering of another human being and was a lifelong champion of the underdog; his world was not right if he knew someone he loved was in pain or distress. He learned from his mistakes, and never stopped trying to “make things right.” He met the love of his life Joyce in January of 1962 in Langley, VA and they married June 2, 1962. Their three children, Jeffrey (Kathleen), Jennifer, and Jean were their greatest source of pride.
Born in Monroe, MI on July 22, 1941 to Eula and Freeman Spangler Jim grew up in Toledo, OH and Maryville, TN and is the middle of five close-knit sons: the late Donald (Illa) Spangler, Glen (Sara) Spangler, the late Phillip Spangler, and Steven (Carol) Spangler.
Together, with his wife Joyce, they raised their family in St. Louis, MO and Napa and Vallejo, CA. In their later years they called Sarasota, FL and Ft. Collins, CO home. He felt most at peace near the ocean or mountains where he loved to walk the beach, boat, fish, and indulge his woodworking and landscaping hobbies.
Jim loved music, the water, animals, BBQing, travel, an excellent garden hose, ice cream, landscaping, Seinfeld, biscuits and gravy, giving to others, and a freshly washed car. He made certain that his children knew the value of hard work, commitment, humor, and how to make a good spaghetti sauce.
He had much love for his grandchildren, Brett (Lorena) of CA, Jordan of Texas, and Jackson of Texas; his daughter-in-law, Kathleen; his three great-granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews; and his brother from another mother, Ludwig Cizinsky.
His quick wit, laughter, and penchant for priceless expressions were a hallmark and will be missed by all who knew him. Jim’s wisdom and kind heart left a mark with everyone he encountered and the world is richer for him having been here.
