Obituary of James Bruce MacGregor
James (Jim) B. MacGregor, 80, of Springfield, Virginia, passed away on January 13, 2020 of natural causes. The memorial service will be held at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 8304 Old Keene Mill Rd, Springfield, VA, on January 17, 2020 at 11 AM led by Pastor Mark Boriack. Interment will be performed at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. Jim was born in Chicago, but spent most of his youth in New York City. He graduated from Fordham University with a B.A. in English literature in 1961, and subsequently served in the U.S. Army for 21 years, including two tours of service in Vietnam for which he was awarded two Bronze Stars. During his military service, Jim served at multiple locations in the U.S. and overseas, including Germany where he met his first wife, Almut. He also earned a master’s degree in adult education from North Carolina State University. Upon retirement from the U.S. Army, Jim continued to serve as a systems engineer for several major defense contracting companies, retiring in 2013. Jim was active in the Scottish cultural community of Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia, including serving as president of the Saint Andrew’s Society of Washington, D.C. In this regard, Jim will be remembered best as the author and webmaster of The Capital Scot™ newsletter and website. Jim was married to Almut MacGregor for 44 years; she preceded him in death in 2009. Jim was married to Patty Williams MacGregor for 9 years. She survives him along with her children Stephanie Williams and Adrian Williams, their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Jim is also survived by his children Jimm MacGregor and Susan VanGorder, and their spouses. In lieu of flowers and for respecting Jim’s last wishes, the family requests persons interested may donate directly to the Wounded Warrior Project online(www.woundedwarriorproject.org). Jim was a loving husband and father, a generous friend, and a faithful servant of God. He will be dearly missed.
