Obituary of David Michael Davenport
David Michael Davenport, 80, loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather, departed from this life peacefully and surrounded by family on August 11, 2024, in Fairfax, VA. David inspired others through his deep love and devotion to family and faith. David was born in Corvallis, Oregon, to Colonel Robert James Davenport, a West Point graduate, and Mary O’Connor Davenport. As an Army child, he moved around the world with his parents and younger brothers, Kevin and Brian, living in Germany, Puerto Rico, Japan, and more than ten U.S. states. He graduated from Carlisle High School (Class of 1961) and Mount St. Mary’s University (Class of 1965). He earned his J.D. from George Washington University (Class of 1968). On April 11, 1970, David married the love of his life, Patricia Reing. Together, they raised three daughters – Christine, Maureen, and Kathleen – in Northern Virginia. As a lawyer, David specialized in criminal law, arbitration, mergers, joint ventures and corporate governance. In 1985, he co-founded Coates & Davenport, P.C., based in Richmond, VA. He was a longtime member of the Virginia Bar Association and was awarded a certificate for over 50 years of service. He also served as the President of the Rotary Club of McLean, VA and was the first recipient of the distinguished service award of the Wound Healing Society, an organization that strives to improve wound outcomes through science, education and communication. In 2019, he was awarded the Pride of the Mount Award for his work and contributions to Mount St. Mary’s. He was on the Board of Directors of Atlas Van Lines for more than two decades, and his many professional achievements stand as a testament to his dedication and hard work on behalf of his clients. David loved politics and viewed the Sunday morning news shows as must-see TV. An avid reader, David was always up for a discussion or lively debate about the state of the world, past or present. His ability to retain obscure facts was remarkable and made him a tough opponent in Trivial Pursuit. David’s true “happy place,” however, was out on the water on a fishing boat. It never mattered whether he “caught the big one,” he simply loved being on the boat and spent many joyful days trolling for fish and enjoying the company of his crewmates off Solomons Island, the Outer Banks, and in the Bahamas. Throughout his life, David struggled with many health ailments, including Type 1 Diabetes. In 2008, he received a kidney transplant from his brother Brian. During all his health challenges, he was nourished and strengthened by his Catholic faith, and never complained or felt sorry for himself. He believed in living life to its fullest and that moving forward was the only direction. The family would like to thank all the doctors and medical professionals who cared for him through the years, especially Dr. Ranjit Cheriyan of the Virginia Nephrology Group. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daughters Christine (Adam), Maureen (Austin) and Katie (Trevor); his 12 grandchildren, Caroline, Caitlin, Will, Mac, Maggie, Molly, Christopher, Charlie, Vivian, Edmund, Jack, and one on the way; his younger brother, Kevin (Dudley); and many nieces, nephews and cousins across the country. David was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Brian (Fran). Visiting hours will be at Demaine Funeral Home (10565 Main Street, Fairfax, VA, 22030) on August 29 from 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held at Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School (1524 35th Street, NW, Washington DC 20007) on Saturday, August 31 at 11 a.m. A reception and celebration of David’s life will immediately follow at Washington Golf & Country Club (3017 N Glebe Road, Arlington, Virginia 22207).
