Gwen was the third of four daughters born to Noble, Albert and Mabel Alice Shepherd.
Guin lived a hard life, raised five children, mostly on her own. She worked very hard for those five loves of her life.
Her children were David Atkinson of Lebanon, Oregon (deceased); Sharlee Agnitsch of Reno, Nevada; Valerie Garrigan of Sacramento, California; Al Atkinson of Camino, California; and Larry Atkinson of Pollock Pines, California
Upon her death she was Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and Great-Great Grandmother to over 35.
Guin, after struggling for many years was convinced by her eldest son, David, to go back to school and take a couple college courses. She went back to school at age 46 which helped her get hired at Franchise Tax Board. She retired in 1988.
She had been married to Lawrence Wesley Mercer for over 35 years, before his passing in January 2007. They resided in Citrus Heights until they sold their home after they both retired in 1988. With her love to drive, they spent the next 18 years traveling in their fifth wheel.
Guin moved to Pollock Pines, CA in 2012. She loved it there and even shoveled snow up until last year. She like to sew. She created her own patterns, and mastered table cloths, clothes pin bags, aprons, and even tried to bring back the Dickie. She gave her crafts to family and friends and sold many at the Pollock Pines Flea Market. She didn’t like to sit idle. Always working on something.
This beautiful, loving, strong little lady built quite a legacy, and was a true inspiration to many.
