Dean Garrett was born on August 17, 1923 in Driftwood, Oklahoma, to Wilby and Walter Garrett. He grew up on the farm and harvested crops on the family farm and others in Alfalfa county. Dean was a career military officer, which began with service to his country during WWII. He ultimately achieved the rank of Lt. Col., and was shot down on return from a mission bombing a Messerchmitt factory, escaping from the country on foot. In later years, he served his country in the Korean War.
He attended Oklahoma State University in three turns, ultimately earning a PhD in Medical Entomology. In 1948, he married Hila Mae Herren and in 1950, they had their only child, Michele LaDean. Hila Mae died as a result of Rheumatic fever, and Dean remarried in 1959, to Margaret Jean Haugen. Then followed three children, Steven Michael in 1960, Lisa Kaye in 1962, and David Dean in 1967. The Garrett family lived in many states as well as abroad, spending the summers visiting relatives and camping across the states. Ultimately retiring in the Sacramento area, Dean enjoyed a cruise of the Western Caribbean and visits from his grandchildren Lindsey, Ryan, Garrett, Madeline, and Ethan. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret, his sister Billye Edwards, and his children and grandchildren.
Services will be held at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA on Tuesday, May 8th at 12:30pm.
