After courageously battling multiple medical issues over the past ten years, Charlene (Char) (Krogh) Hoover passed peacefully on Aug. 23, 2016 at home, with her beloved husband Gene at her side.
A first-generation American, Char was born to Danish immigrant parents on Aug. 12, 1935 and raised in Everett, WA. After graduating from Everett High School, she followed her California dream to Sacramento in 1958. It was love at first sight when she met Eugene (Gene) Hoover at the Fremont Presbyterian Church singles group in 1967. They eloped three years later to Reno the day after Christmas 1970. Their relationship was unique in that they were both fortunate to retire in their late 30s and were thus able to spend virtually every hour of every day of their 46 year marriage together as one. Ask anyone and they will agree – it was a partnership truly blessed, built upon a foundation of unconditional love, mutual respect and shared values.
Never having children, Char was devoted to her eight nieces and nephews. She will always be remembered by her honorary sons and daughters, as well as her family and friends, as an individual of integrity and honor; a thoughtful aunt who never forgot a birthday or anniversary; a generous woman who always seemed to give the most memorable presents; a gracious hostess who always had an open invitation to her home and an extra place-setting ready; and as an inspiration, a confidant, and a lady of grace and class.
A devout Christian, Char had a deep faith in God and lived her life according to His word. She cherished the deep friendships and community brought about by her long-time devotion to and affiliation with Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church, in which she was honored to serve as a deacon. A friend said of Char, “She was a gentle sprit, a lovely Christian woman who personified what a Christian woman should be like.” As her family gathered to say their good-byes during the final days of her life, many noted how at peace she was with her inevitable passing. It was this deep faith that gave her the greatest comfort during her final days, knowing she would surely be one with God in Heaven. The family is forever grateful to Pastor Henry Wells for his passionate counsel and comforting words.
Char is survived by her husband, Gene; three sisters-in law, Joan Krogh, Sequim, WA; Shirley Sanders, Conrad, MT, and Gerry Hoover, Snohomish, WA; eight nieces and nephews: Ron Krogh (Susan), Steilacoom, WA; Charlie Krogh (Ava), Orting, WA; Tony Krogh (Rhonda), Dayton, OH; Kim Gilland (Kevin), Aurora, CO; Randy Hoover, Snohomish, WA; Tammy Minderman, Omaha, NE; Lance Hoover (Kari), Shelby, MT, and Eric Sanders, Seattle, WA, as well as numerous grand-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother and father Charley and Delia Krogh, sister, Elvera Krogh, and brother, Lee Krogh.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 in the Chapel of Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church, 11427 Fair Oaks Blvd., Fair Oaks, CA. A reception will follow. Donations may be made to the KAY (Kids and Youth) Center, Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church.
Char’s cremains will be laid to rest at Mount Vernon Memorial Park & Mortuary, Fair Oaks.
Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.
My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so,
would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me
that you also may be where I am.
John 14: 1-3
