In Loving Memory of Kiu Chac – A Super Woman by All Accounts
By Sam Ta, one of her loving children
The best way to describe our mom, Kiu Chac was that she was a jack of all trades and a master of a few. Although Kiu passed away on February 15, 2021 at the age of 83 after a decade long battle with multiple strokes; she is surrounded by six children and many grandchildren who will continue to honor her legacy for love and compassion, for having a great work ethic, and for being humble and forgiving of others. Little did we realize; these will be the guiding principles in which we will hold sacred for the rest of our lives.
As a mother, Kiu embodied all the great qualities that results from hardship and perseverance. As a young woman, she entered an arranged marriage where she endured many hardships with her mother-in-law and in raising six children, on many occasions without my father around, due to the Vietnam War. Through it all, she learned to cook, sew, dodged a few bullets, managed the family business and on a few occasions, and even chased away a few burglars in order to keep us safe.
As a horticulturist, Kiu understood how plants grew and kept them healthy. She could plant anything and had the most beautiful vegetables in her garden. We were very fortunate growing up as we had the freshest, organically grown vegetables for dinner. We were going organic well before “Going Organic” was ever in vogue.
As businesswoman, Kiu understood the fundamentals of negotiations and good bookkeeping. She taught herself the basic principles of managing a small business and oversaw the family shop while our father was away during the War.
Finally, as a Do-It-Yourself guru, she taught herself how to sew, cut hair, build, and fix things around the house. Growing up, my mom made our clothes, styled our hair, and built shelves as well as fix various broken household items. She was your modern-day DIY Home Depot and YouTuber.
The contributions Kiu made in her children and grandchildren’s lives are immeasurable. On this day, we celebrate her life, and the tremendous impact she had on all of us that will carry forward to future generations in the Ta family.
A funeral service is scheduled for 9 am on March 7, 2021 at the Evergreen Funeral Home at 4504 Broadway Everett, WA 98203.
