Shirley is survived by her husband of 57 years, Charlie Hayse of Evansville, IN; daughter, Robin Angermeier (Don) of Owensville, IN; son, Keith Hayse (Merrin) of Boulder, CO; daughter, Kelly Holzmeyer (Lloyd) of Lake St. Louis, MO; brother, Ed Bradley (Jo) of Topsham, ME; grandchildren, Katie Sachse (Curtis); Alex Angermeier (Kassie); Neil Angermeier (Dana); Tessa Savage (Ben); Billy Angermeier; Logan Myrick; Madison Boyer-Hayse; Addison Holzmeyer (Franci); Taylor Holzmeyer (Kara); and Rianne Holzmeyer; and ten great-grandchildren.
Shirley graduated in 1955 from Bosse High School and completed her undergraduate and Master's Degrees in Education at the University of Evansville. Shirley was a long-time teacher for the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation, spending most of her career at Cedar Hall Elementary School in Evansville. Her love of her students enriched both her life and theirs.
Shirley’s complete devotion to Charlie was an inspiration, and she felt blessed to have such a long marriage to the love of her life. She delighted in the company of her family and friends, relishing every opportunity to be in their presence. Laughter played an important role in family gatherings-Shirley’s sense of humor brightened the hearts of all. She was passionate about her sewing, especially quilt tops, gifting many to family, friends, and charity, and she delighted in social interactions with fellow quilters. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading... and eating ice cream. She looked forward to each day’s 4:00 wine-time with Charlie. They loved to cruise, visiting distant lands like Hawaii, Alaska, Australia, the Panama Canal, and Europe, accumulating over 500 days at sea.
Shirley had a servant’s heart. When she was raising her young family, she was committed to her work with the Psi Iota Xi Philanthropic Sorority. Her involvement with the First Presbyterian Church in Ft. Branch and St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Evansville filled both her own spiritual life and provided her great joy in service to her community.
Visitation will be held Saturday, December 14 from 1-2 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ German Township, 8701 Big Cynthiana Rd., Evansville, IN. Funeral service will follow at 2:00.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ German Township, Linda E. White Hospice House, or St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Shirley’s name.
Shirley will be deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to know her.
