Obituary of Rebecca Warring Sonnemaker
Rebecca Warring Sonnemaker, 81, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2024. Born on July 21, 1943, Becky dedicated much of her life to education, touching the lives of countless students during her tenure with the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation. From 1971 until her retirement in 2008, she taught Kindergarten at Evans, and second and third grades at Harper and Daniel Wertz schools, leaving a lasting impact through her commitment to her students' growth and well-being. Becky was a proud alumna of Benjamin Bosse High School where she played violin in the orchestra. She furthered her education at Indiana University which culminated in earning a Master's degree at the University of Evansville while teaching and rearing her two children. Her love for learning and passion for teaching were evident to those who knew her. She was a regular attendee at Trinity United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the chancel choir for many years and, in more recent years, volunteering with Sister Joanna’s Table. She also found joy helping others with the Busy Mrs. group. She loved to travel, go antiquing, decorate her home for every season, read novels and participate in book clubs, and have friends and family over for meals and games. Becky was preceded in death by her parents, Janira and Herman Shuel; and her sister, Barbara Morgan. She is survived by her children, Jessica Sonnemaker; Andy Sonnemaker (Rhonda Holloway); grandson, Wesley Sonnemaker; and nephew, Jon Morgan (Denise). Her life was marked by her dedication to her family and students. Her memory will be cherished by those who knew her. A Celebration of Life will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at Trinity United Methodist Church. In remembrance of Becky’s life and love of children, the family asks that donations to the United Methodist Youth Home be made in her honor. https://umyh.org/donate-now/ Condolences may be offered at www.AlexanderEastChapel.com
