Obituary of Louis Henry Carl
Louis Henry Carl, 91, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2019, at North River Health Campus. He was born Friday, January 13, 1928, in Boonville, Missouri, to Edwin G. and Louise (Greis) Carl. He was a graduate of Laura Speed Elliot High School (Boonville, Missouri). After High School, Louis attended College at the University of Missouri School of Mining and Engineering at Rolla, Missouri. After one year of college and following his eighteenth birthday in 1945, Louis voluntarily enlisted in the United States Army. After three years of service which including travel to bases and stations throughout the United States as an aircraft engine technician, Louis was honorably discharged from the newly formed United States Air Force, and reenrolled at the University of Missouri at Rolla (now the Missouri University School of Science and Technology) where he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was an honor student and member of Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation, Louis accepted employment at Seeger Refrigeration Company in Evansville, Indiana, which became Whirlpool-Seeger Corporation by merger in 1955. Louis worked for Whirlpool for 43 years until his retirement. He took great pride in being a Senior Product Engineer and was honored to also serve as the Company’s Resident Engineer. He was awarded multiple patents for his design and engineering work on behalf of the Company. Louis served his community as a longtime board member and treasurer for the McCutchanville Community Association. His tireless efforts and leadership greatly contributed to the development of the McCutchanville Community Ball Park including the addition of several baseball and soccer fields, shelter houses, playgrounds, and infrastructure supporting youth sports. Louis was a devoted baseball fan. Over several years he coached hundreds of young ballplayers on baseball teams of all ages and abilities. Leading by example, he demonstrated to scores of young players that sometimes nice guys can finish first. A lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, he watched and listened to games throughout his final illness. Louis’ additional interests included gardening, solitaire, soduku puzzles, bowling, and Purple Aces Basketball. He was a member of the St. Lucas, Bethlehem, and St. Johns East United Churches of Christ, and American Legion Funkhouser Post 8. Louis is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Catherine (Yandell) Carl; his sons, Douglas (Sheila), Christopher (Vicky), Michael (Kimberly), and Marcus (JoDee); his brother, Ralph (Jane); his Brother in Law, Kenneth Yandell (Mary); his Sister in Law Barbara Yandell, and his adored grandchildren including, Rachel, Zachary, Matthew, Kathryn Marie, Jonathon, and Loren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Louis was preceded in death by his brother, George Carl, and his Brother in Law, Richard Yandell. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, May 22 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Alexander Funeral Home-North Chapel, 4200 Stringtown Road, Evansville, Indiana 47711. Funeral Services will be held at Thursday, May 23 at 11:00 am at St. Johns East United Church of Christ, 7000 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, Indiana 47715, with additional visitation at the church from 10:00 am until service time. A luncheon will be held in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following interment and military services at Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery, 2200 Mesker Park Drive, Evansville, Indiana 47720.
