Obituary of Joan "Joni" L. Bohler Turpin
Joan “Joni” Lea Turpin, 79, of Evansville, passed away Monday, March 31, 2014, after a long illness. She was born in Princeton, IN on September 12, 1934. She was a 1952 graduate of Princeton High School, where she was a cheerleader, majorette and member of the homecoming court. She was an avid sports fan, and loved the Cardinals, Yankees, Bulls, UK and Tony Stewart. Her passion was sailing and collecting nautical items. All in all she had over 2,000 pieces of nautical related items. She spent 18 years with the Evansville Outlaws Semi-Pro Baseball Club as the Team Mom working the gate at home games and at the USBC Semi-Pro World Series at Bosse Field. She is one of only three women to be inducted into the National Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame. During her work career, she spent many years at Wesselman’s Coffee Shop and later in life found her niche as the Business and Service Director at Thrifty Nickel (now American Classifieds). During her time at Thrifty Nickel, she set many records for her department nationally. In retirement, she worked at Plantation Apartments in the front office. She loved watching her grandson, Taylor, play baseball when she could and he always performed well when she was in attendance. Joni was preceded in death by her son, David in 1982. She is survived by her sons, Tim Turpin of Evansville and Steven of Indianapolis; and grandson, Taylor Turpin of Evansville. Per her wishes there will be no funeral service or visitation. There will be a celebration of her life at The Pub, 1340 W. Division Street, Evansville, IN on Friday, April 4, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
