Alexander Funeral Home - North Chapel
Jane Ann Schaefer Smith passed away on November 19, 2023, at the age of 87 after a long illness. She was born on April 10, 1936, in Evansville, IN. Jane graduated from Bosse High School in 1954 where she met her husband Don Smith, at age 15. They remained inseparable for 73 years.
Jane’s passion was her family who called her Mimi. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. The family enjoyed many wonderful times together at John Newcombe’s Tennis Ranch, San Destin and the annual July 4th parade in addition to more routine fun like eating Mexican food.
Jane and her husband Don bought Lloyd’s Ice Cream, now known as Lic’s Deli and Ice Cream, in 1963. In the early years, Jane managed family matters while Don worked long hours. They were partners in every sense of the word.
Jane was also a talented watercolor artist, known as Schaefer Smith. Her art is featured at Lic’s as well as in other businesses and homes. She captured important moments with beautiful art. Her art reflected her kind spirit and sense of style. She will be remembered for her beautiful blue eyes, smile with dimples and gentle laugh. She connected with everyone she met.
Jane was a lifelong member of Methodist Temple Church.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Evelyn and Albert Schaefer. Jane is survived by her husband of 66 years, Donald Smith; children, Jamia Brown (Ross) and Kara Combs (Chris); grandchildren Brittany Ward, Bayley Callahan (Mick), Cayman Combs; great grandchildren, Somer Jane Ward, Ross Ward, Rocco Callahan, and Monte Callahan; and sister, Deborah McFall.
The family would like to thank the staff of Grace Care and Heart to Heart Hospice for the care and compassion they showed Jane in her final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, December 29, 2023 at Alexander Funeral Home – North Chapel. Friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
