After more than a century of gracing this earth, Genevieve Frances Pledger quietly severed the bonds that tied her to this earth on May 3, 2016. Born on October 8, 1914, to Jacob and Anna Moll, Genevieve was raised and spent her formative years in Mount Vernon, Ind. where she attended Saint Matthew’s Elementary and Mount Vernon High School. Being the second eldest in a family of nine children, she was relied on heavily in caring and shepherding her younger siblings. After graduating from High School she entered the family business, the old Mount Vernon Wholesale House.
The course of her life was dramatically altered when she encountered Roy Pledger while making her daily banking run for the Wholesale House. After a year plus courtship, they were married on November 28, 1942 in Mount Vernon. This bond was strong and true, only broken after 50 years of marriage on Roy’s death on August 15, 1993. Together they nurtured their family of five in the Mount Vernon and Evansville area, instilling in them a solid moral compass with a strong and solid work ethic. Strongly committed to her family and faith, Genevieve was a stay-at-home mother through the formative years of her children lives. She lived her life with grace and integrity. When she did enter the work force, it was at the tri-state areas most noted dress boutique, Kaiser’s, where she established a large and loyal cliental looking to impress the town. A deeply religious individual, she attended Saint Benedict’s Catholic Church for the past 50+ years and donating both time and energy to a number of church ministries, including the Legion of Mary. Her major diversion and indulgence was bridge. She was a member of several, long standing bridge groups that played weekly at the Evansville Country Club, Elks, or an individual member’s home. She only ended her participation in these groups in her late nineties due to declining health.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Roy and her son William Pledger.
She is survived by two sons, Steve (Marcia) Pledger and John (Toni Marie) Pledger; two daughters, Mary Kay (Jeffrey) Hull and Gail Pledger (David Hatfield); 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Benedict Cathedral on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at 11:00 AM, with inurnment to follow in Alexander Memorial Park.
