She was the youngest of eight children born to Charles D. and Mary Jo Calhoun. Dorothy moved to Evansville with her mother in 1940 after graduating from high school at Mount St Joseph Academy in Maple Mount, KY. She attended Lockyear Business College and then worked for Sunbeam in Evansville. On December 7, 1941, she met her future husband, John C. Ziegler, of Langhorne, PA. They married May 16, 1944, after he completed his 25 missions as a B-17 copilot flying bombing missions over Germany and France. From 1944 to 1955 she and her husband lived in many places in the USA, Germany and Japan. After the death of her husband on March 9, 1955, in Furstenfeldbruck, Germany, she returned to Evansville to raise her three children near her mother, Mary Jo Calhoun; sister, Evelyn Calhoun; and sister and brother-in-law, Cil and Tony Picucci. In Evansville, she worked for the Evansville Printing Corp. from 1962 to her retirement in 1987. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Dorothy moved to Commerce, GA in 2007 to live with her youngest daughter, Cindy.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Major John C. Ziegler, 56 years ago.
She is survived by her three children, Ron Ziegler and his wife, Pamela (Fitzsimmons), of Henderson, NV, Linda Z. Petersen and her husband, Keith, of Americus, GA and Cindy Bregenzer and her husband, Roger, of Commerce, GA; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 AM Monday, September 19, 2011, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1301 South Green River Road, officiated by Fr. Bernard Etienne, with burial in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at Alexander East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) or Holy Rosary Catholic School in Dorothy’s name.
