The family of Barbara Ann Marr of Evansville deeply regret to report her passing on December 11, 2022 at the age of 86. Barbara was born in Ames, Iowa in 1936 to Amy and Frank McLaughlin. She moved to Evansville in 1971 with her husband, Jackson (Jack) L. Marr and three sons, Rex, Scott and Jeff.
Those who knew Barbara will remember her fondly over her 51 years in Evansville as a teacher, friend and a fixture in the stands at University of Southern Indiana basketball games and Varsity Club events. A redbud tree stands on the USI campus to memorialize her long-time service to the University.
Barbara attended Roosevelt Elementary School and Ames High School where she excelled in dance and cheerleading. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Iowa State University and her Master’s in Education from Indiana State University. After moving to Evansville, she was a teacher at the Literacy (Reading) Center for two years and in 1973 joined the staff at Tekoppel Elementary School where she taught multiple generations of students in Kindergarten and later Second Grade, retiring in 2002. Even recently, former students would come up to her and introduce themselves and talk about their time in her class. She seldom if ever forgot a student.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and husband Jack. She is survived by her children, Rex Johnson (Theresa) of Sioux Falls, SD, Scott Johnson (Julie) of Logansport, IN and Jeffery Marr (Pamela) of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren, Lauren Smith (Stephen), Taylor Lentz (Austin), Kayla Marr, Andrew Marr (Kendra), Alexander Marr, Eric Lien, Laura Lien and Kristen Davis (Steven), and four great grandchildren, Brooks, Sylvie, Devlin and Tessa, all of whom loved her deeply.
To meet Barbara was to like her instantly. Barbara’s friends and students will always remember the warmth and love she gave to those around her. Her absence leaves a profound hole in our hearts. Barbara Marr will be sorely missed by all.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at Alexander West Chapel officiated by Pastor Terry Farmer.
