Obituary of Alvena K. Phillips Dewig
Alvena DeWig, 91, of Evansville, passed away Thursday, November 10, 2011, at Good Samaritan Home. She was born August 12, 1920, in Newburgh, the daughter of Arthur and McConnel Phillips. She was widowed and the age of 42 and raised five children on her own. She owned and operated Quality Drapery for over 30 years. Many customers remember her exceptional craftsmanship. For a time, she took in college students and relatives, becoming a “mother” to them. They often talk of her kindness and loving nature. She was an exceptional person who always saw the good in others. She was a very gifted and talented person who loved working with people, and people truly loved her. She had been an active member of St. Luke Lutheran church in Newburgh. Alvena loved her children; they were her “Five Little Angels.” Truth be known, there was not an angel in the bunch, but you could not convince her of that. It was also true of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sons, Jerry (Jan) and Donny (Charlotte) DeWig; daughters, Mary (Steve) Martin, Betty (Dean) Ashby and Peggy Zitella; grandchildren, Eric DeWig, Chris (Bruce) Rainey, Julie Hodges, Brian Poett, Kimberly (Bart) Willner, Brad (Ricki) Martin, Greg (Kelley) Ashby, Brian (Julie) Ashby, Doug (Liberty) DeWig and Jason (Amber) DeWig; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Marvin (Joanne) Phillips; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Phillips, Eileen DeWig and Polly DeWig; brother-in-law, Richard DeWig; someone special, Suzi DeWig; and many nieces and nephews, who called her “Aunt Beanie.” Services will be 10:30 AM Monday, November 14, 2011, at Alexander North Chapel, officiated by Pastor Tom Vanselow. Friends may visit Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Home Pathways (Alzheimer’s) Unit.
