Mr. Frederick L. Judge

On August 11, 2018, Frederick L. Judge departed this world after a prolonged illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Fred was born to Elsie Mueller Judge and John Linwood Judge in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1934. He met his future wife Janet Florence Hudson when he was 16 years old, and they would have celebrated their 64th anniversary August 28. Fred spent two years at Virginia Military Institute before transferring to University of Virginia pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering. Fred and Janet both graduated from UVA in 1957.

Fred started his career at Sandia Corporation in Albuquerque, NM, and later fulfilled his military obligations with the Army Signal Corps tracking early satellites. He then joined Hughes Aircraft Company, where he was instrumental in the implementation of many projects including DirecTV, JCSat in Japan, and an early satellite system for Indonesia called Palapa. He retired as Senior Vice President and COO from Hughes Communications after 35 years. After Hughes, Fred served as President and CEO of Linkabit Wireless and other Titan Corporation Businesses from 1994 to 1999. After Titan, Fred served as Executive VP of Marketing and Sales for AssureSat.

After fully retiring in 2004, Fred relearned trombone after an absence of 50 years, joining a community symphony and a concert band. He enjoyed traveling and boating. He was an active member of Rotary Club, served on the Board of the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club, and was a Deacon and Elder at the Village Church where he ran their missions program for several years. Fred was predeceased by his parents and his brother Samuel D. Judge. He is survived by his wife Janet Judge and daughters Christine Mills of Sonoma, CA, Carolyn McDonnell of Navarre, FL, Sandra Burton of Palos Verdes, CA, son Paul Judge of Boise, ID, brother John Judge of Leesburg, VA, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A Memorial service will be held at the Village Church on September 8th at 1 PM.
