Carol was born and raised in Glendale, Kentucky, the daughter of Homer and Mary Lee O’Brien. She graduated from Glendale High School, where she made many lifelong friends. As a young adult, she worked at the Lincoln Car Hop while attending Western Kentucky State College, where she earned her degree in Education. While there, she met her husband of sixty years, Curtis Huffer.
After graduating, she began her teaching career at Lincoln Trail Elementary, and then spent most of her career at Parkway Elementary as the librarian. After retiring from Parkway, she became the librarian at St. Brigid School, where she became fast friends with Charles Barkley and admired his skills teaching children (thanks to Multiple System Atrophy). Carol loved reading and watching how books could effect change in a young person’s life. While working, she was a loving mother, and fabulous Fern while creating a loving and caring environment to raise her two daughters and later be a strong Gibby influence in her grandson’s life.
Carol was an active member in her churches, from playing the piano and organ to teaching Vacation Bible Schools to serving on multiple committees. She was also the bringer of rum cakes, fruit cakes, and her infamous pink rice.
God has taken her to her heavenly home, where it is March Madness every day and her beloved Louisville Cardinals are always the winner (but she might let Baylor win on occasion).
Carol is survived by her husband Curtis Huffer; two daughters, Leesa Jo Googe (Mike) and Kathi Linn Maddox (Scott); and one grandson, Jacob Maddox, her Pooh. She had three beloved grand-fur-babies, Shadow, Sydney, and Cooper. She also leaves behind a sister, Janet O’Brien, and a multitude of other loving family and friends.
A service to celebrate Carol's life will be held on Monday, July 22, at 11 AM, at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown, KY. Visitation will take place on Sunday, July 21, from 3 PM to 6 PM. Please wear your favorite red outfits to honor Carol and show your appreciation for her life.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, Carol’s family would appreciate donations in her honor to the 502 Circle to support the Louisville Cardinals.
