Raul V. Marquez, age 71, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2021, of El Paso, TX. Raul was a great son, brother, father, uncle, friend and especially grandfather. Survived by his sons, Raul Marquez Jr., Raymundo Marquez and Rene Paul Marquez. His two grandkids Kathryn Lyseth Marquez and Evan Raul Marquez; Sisters: Ofelia Hernandez, husband Lony Hernandez; Marylou Parra; Irene Maldonado, husband Mike Maldonado; Brother, Roberto Marquez; Sister in law; Iris Marquez, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceded in death by his father, Francisco Marquez; mother, Cruz Villanueva Marquez; and brother, Francisco Marquez Jr.; nephew Joey Hernandez.
Raul was a graduate of Ysleta High School. He was an outstanding pitcher, shortstop and outfielder. Earned multiple All District and All City Honors. He helped lead Ysleta to a District Championship in 1968. Raul was named All City, All District and All State in 1968. In 1970, was First Team All American as a pitcher for Ranger Junior College. Pittsburgh Pirates, the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals drafted him before being drafted by the U.S. Army in 1971. He played all over the world for the Army and played in international leagues and tournaments. Played in Lower Valley and Juarez leagues during the 1970’s and 1980’s. Played for the Aces, Jalapenos and Drillers. Coached youth leagues for 25 years from T-Ball to Connie Mack levels winning several championships. In 1997, was inducted into the El Paso Baseball Hall of Fame and in 2008 was inducted into the USSSA El Paso Softball Hall of Fame. Was a member of the El Paso Baseball Hall of Fame Board of Directors where he received several recognition awards.
Raul was a great teammate, feared opponent and a fierce competitor. Was known as the “Vacuum Cleaner” at third base. Was never afraid to sacrifice his body to get an out. Raul was known as a “Hero” in baseball/softball to his sons and nephews. . He taught them all how to play the game.
Raul will be known as a Legend in the Baseball/Softball community.
Services are being held on Thursday, July 29th at Martin Funeral Home at 1460 George Dieter, El Paso, TX. 79936. Viewing will begin at 5pm. Rosary will begin at 6pm. Mass will be on Friday, July 30th at Cristo Rey Church at 8011 Williamette Ave at 9am.
