Raul "Pops" Chavira, a US Army Korean War Veteran of El Paso, Texas passed away at the age of 93, on January 09, 2023. An avid Dallas Cowboys football fan. Pops was often found playing football or racing with his children and grandchildren down the street at his home on Jackson Avenue. Always willing to help improve the athletic performance of everyone around him, Pops never shied away from the opportunity to provide coaching to anyone wanting help. Nothing was off limits, from Boxing and Football to Chess and Golf, Pops made himself available to help.
When not outside, Pops often described the importance of being a “Gentleman and a Scholar.” Pops valued education and expressed that education can always be obtained through traditional or non-traditional avenues. Pops often spoke of the life lessons he learned during his upbringing from his mom “Chiefa.” He is now reunited with his wife, Modesta “Prieta” Chavira, keeping watch over all their family.
Raul was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War. He served as a PFC (T) in Company A of 773rd Tank Battalion (Hvy). However the only stories ever shared were those of his time with his fellow soldiers and the escapades that ensued.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Modesta J. Chavira, his brothers Jesus and Alfredo Chavira, and sister Gloria Anaya. Pops is survived by his three sons, Raul G. Chavira Jr. (wife, Gabriella), Fernando Chavira (wife, Cristina), and Manuel Chavira (wife, Teresa), his grandchildren Lorrilly, Veronica, Amanda, Mark (wife, Claudia), Cynthia, Bianca, Alyssa, Jacob, Marysol, Bella, Margarite, Alexander, and his great grandchildren Ciera, Voss, Cy, Elan, Monica, and Maximiliano, and sisters Mary J. Douglass and Olga Chavira.
