Mona was a native El Pasoan and a graduate of Ysleta High School. She was a vibrant, joyful, loving, and Godly woman who loved telling stories and good jokes. She could light up a room with her contagious laughter. She was often the first to lead everyone onto the dance floor, especially when Billy Ocean’s “Caribbean Queen” was on.
Mona served this great country as a military spouse and traveled around the world. Her dedicated service to our country ensured that her husband of 49 years, Armando Espino (U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant, Ret.), could serve with honor. Mona could make a military house a home in less than a week. She had a keen attention to detail and organization, which was necessary when managing a household of 4 and an assortment of pets.
As a sister and a friend, Mona always found time to talk and share her love. She cared deeply for the poor and for animals and volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul Society and Goodwill.
Mona’s legacy will carry on through her family: Armando Espino (husband), Michelle Espino Lira (daughter) and John Lira (son-in-law), Valerie Espino (daughter), Matthew Espino and Genaveve Heredia (grandchildren), Hazel Mendoza (great-grandchild), Aurora Ortega (sister), Alfredo Castañeda (brother) and Rachel Castañeda (sister-in-law), as well as her nieces, nephew, and cousins.
