Oscar Garcia, a.k.a. “Big O”, known for his fighting spirit, entrepreneurial drive, love of dogs, and witty sense of humor passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024 at the age of 66. He was surrounded by family.
Oscar was born in El Paso, Texas to Francisco and Petra Garcia on September 25, 1957. He grew up on Chula Vista St. and attended Bel Air High School where he met the love of his life, Dolores Escobar. They married while still teenagers and, together, they raised 4 children: 3 sons and 1 daughter.
Oscar was, first and foremost, a doer and carried with him a lets-get-it-done mentality. He was an entrepreneur who never saw dreams as simply dreams but as a series of steps to pluck goals from the imaginary into reality. In his lifetime, he had a burrito truck; he owned a convenience store and restaurant which he lovingly named “Lolita’s” after his wife; he was a truck driver and drove an 18-wheeler across the country; he managed air freight at Emery Worldwide which he eventually left to start his own company, Dynamic Drywall and Paint Services. Despite a lack of experience in the world of construction, he learned quickly and successfully ran the company for many years until his final days.
Oscar was preceded in death by his mother, Petra, whom he adored and missed dearly, his father, Francisco, “Kiko”, who taught him how to be a provider for his family, his brothers David, Arturo, and Jose, and his favorite dog Pepper, “my Pepper.”
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Dolores Garcia, 4 children: Oscar Jr. (Anissa), Michael (Denise), Andy (Bonnie), and Melissa (Ivan); 5 grandchildren: Sammy, Santino, Julian, Sofia, and Sebastian; 8 siblings: Margarita, Francisco, Evangelina, Irene, Mary Lou, Cristina, Yolie, and Jessica; and 2 dogs: Lily and Lita.
Throughout his life, Oscar left a positive influence on many people. He was an ideal positive male role model to those that knew him. He lived a fulfilling and vibrant life filled with challenges, of course, but never lacking in love or the will to carry on, even in his final days. “And,” as Oscar loved to say, “the rest is history.”
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 16, 2024 from 5:00- 9:00 PM with a Rosary at 7:00 PM at Hillcrest Funeral Home East. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at 9:30 AM at Corpus Christi Church. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery East.
