Maria Teresa Torres

Maria Teresa (Medrano) Torres passed away peacefully in her El Paso home on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at the age of 91. She was born in El Paso, Texas on February 5, 1933 to Luz and Antonio Medrano. She attended Bowie High School, then worked at the famous White House Department Store, followed by many years at Farrah, then eventually volunteered for the El Paso juvenile detention home, where she worked as a foster grandparent. Afterwards, she decided she still wanted to help others and become a Senior Companion-Caregiver.

In 1950 Maria (aka Tere) met Efren C. Torres who at the time was a taxi driver for El Paso Red Cab. They married in 1965 and made their home in El Paso, where they had two daughters and two sons. They moved to Gardena, CA for a short period of time before returning back to El Paso in 1972.

“Tere” was known for her good humor, great story telling, hard work, and the kindness, love and attention she had for others. She is survived by her husband Efren C. Torres; two daughters, Sylvia Torres and Lucille Torres Vasquez; three sons, Daniel Medrano, Rommel Torres, and Christopher Torres; two brothers, Manuel (Flaco) Medrano and Antonio Medrano; and 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She leaves behind the apple of her eye, granddaughter Desiree Torres Carbajal, who selflessly took care of her until her last breath. She was predeceased by her siblings Alfredo Medrano, Samuel Medrano, Carlos Medrano, Delia Medrano Padilla, and Bertha Luz Medrano Reynoso, as well as her son from her first marriage, Armando Nevarez.

A visitation for Maria will be held Monday, July 1, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hillcrest Funeral Home, 1060 North Carolina Drive, El Paso, TX 79915. A rosary will occur Monday, July 1, 2024 at 6:00 PM, 1060 North Carolina Drive, El Paso, TX 79915. A funeral mass will occur Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at 11:30 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 602 S Oregon St, El Paso, Texas 79901. A graveside service will occur Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Ave, El Paso, TX 79906.
