Maria C. Gonzalez

Maria C. Gonzalez, 88, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Wednesday, December 3, 2014. Maria was a member of the Hijas de Maria, she painted oil paintings on mantels and made curtains for Cristo Rey Church (Smeltertown). She was a member of the original Mt. Cristo Rey Committee and was also member of an All-Female Semi-Pro basketball team. Maria was preceded in death by her husband of 48 yrs. Macario Gonzalez Sr. She is survived by her children; Eva Rodriguez, Macario “Sonny” Gonzalez Jr., Cecilia Gonzalez, Anna Gonzalez, Terry Villarreal (Tony), Stella Ramirez, Martha G. Silva (Sal) , Margie G. Sustaita (Jesus “Chooch” Resendez) and daughter-in-law Laura Gonzalez. Maria is also survived by her brother, Pedro Castanon Jr., sister, Consuelo C. Herrera, 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held Monday, December 8, from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Hillcrest Funeral Home with Vigil beginning at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, December 9th at 12 pm at San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church, 503 Hunter. Pallbearers will be Angel Gonzalez, DJ Vasquez, JJ Rodriguez, Gabriel Rodriguez, Michael Joe Gonzalez, David Ramirez, Eric Compton and Marc Villarreal. Honorary Pallbearers are Angie R. Carter, Christine and Anthony Greer, James Compton Jr., Eddie Avila, Sal Aguilar Jr., Jesse Aguilar and Salvador Aguilar Sr. Maria will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Macario, at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery at 1:30 pm. Services entrusted to Hillcrest Funeral Home, 1060 North Carolina.
