Margaret Fortune, born on March 2, 1921, in Mayodan, N.C. passed away peacefully on February 11, 2011, after a brief illness. The third of eleven children of Cora and Brantley Atkins, Margaret was reared in Mayodan, meeting her future husband, Irvin, at a baseball field directly in front of her home. Margaret and Irvin lived in San Antonio, moving to El Paso in 1961. Margaret enjoyed playing golf with her friends at El Paso Country Club and Coronado Country Club for many years. When her golfing days were over she enjoyed playing bridge. She took particular joy in the company of her daughter-in-law, Janet, and her two grandsons, Travis and Reese. Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, Irvin, brothers J. B. and Roy Atkins, and sisters Peggy Atkins and Ruby Shelton. Margaret is survived by her son, Craig, brother Michael Atkins, and sisters Nellie Hensdale, Teeny Atkins, Frances Martin, Libby Williams, and Shirley Montgomery. Margaret was an exceptionally kind, caring wife, mother and a special person to her friends and family. Special thanks to Dr. Dwayne Aboud, Zulema De La Paz and Cima Hospice, and Rufiss Briseno. Following a private graveside service at Memory Gardens of the Valley, a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at 10:00 AM at Western Hills United Methodist Church, 524 Thunderbird.
