Georgia Sam Payne Clifton (March 17, 1935 – October 5, 2022) was born in El Paso, Texas as a first generation American, her parents immigrating from Greece. She attended El Paso High School and Texas Women’s University before working in the banking industry and then as a realtor. She was also active in various women’s organizations in El Paso, along with being an avid tennis and golf player.
Georgia had a great sense of humor, a beautiful and infectious laugh, and just knew how to have fun. Never was she at a loss for friends and everyone who remembers her will surely also remember her sparkling eyes, bright smile and some crazy story about a terrific time they had with her. She was a class act, a one-of-a-kind wife, mother, mimi and friend, and she will be greatly missed!
Georgia is survived by two sons, Robert Payne III (husband Manuel Caraveo) and Sam Payne (wife Catherine Cohen Payne); three grandchildren (Kristen Polito, Lauren Payne-McDermott and Alex Payne); and three great-grandchildren (Vincent Polito, Weston and Easton Payne).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Helen Beys, sister Catherine Angelos, husband KJ Clifton, father of her children, Robert Payne Jr., and youngest son Tom Payne, as well as many beloved poodles and yorkies.
Eternal gratitude and thanks for the amazing care given by Mariana Zarate of Westwind Foster Care, her assistants Aracely and Mari, and her children, Marianita, Ricardo, Luis Carlos and Jorge.
Memorial contributions may be made to the West Texas chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
