Betty Leigh Thornton Sterling, passed away July 24, 2010. She was born on January 19, 1933 to Dolby McLaughlin Thornton and Tommy Thornton. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Herman. She is survived by her loving son Rod, her daughter-in-law Laurie Malooly, their children Ryan L. Sterling and Sean P. Sterling, brother-in-law, Ben Sterling, sister-in-law, Dottie and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty graduated from El Paso High School, where she played varsity tennis all four years of high school and went to play in the Texas State Championship. After high school, she attended Texas Western College (UTEP). She was an active member of ZTA and on Golddigger team. She loved to ride her horse, play tennis and bridge. Bridge is where she met all her lifetime friends. She played with several different groups of ladies 3 to 4 times a week. One of the groups she played with was duplicate and the Friday Group. After marrying Herman, she volunteered for 30 years at Sun Towers Hospital (Las Palmas), where her mother started the volunteer gift shop. Betty served as president of Sun Towers Hospital Auxiliary for many years. She also served on the Sun Carnival as co-chair for the chaperone committee. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Martin Funeral Home West. Interment will follow at Evergreen Alameda Cemetery, 4301 Alameda, El Paso, TX 79905 and final game of bridge (lunch) . In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of your choice.
