Alvin Jones, Sr. was called from earth to glory on Tuesday, April 6, 2021. Alvin was born in Norfolk, VA, on September 3, 1964, to Mary McInnis and the late William Jones. He married the love of his life, Vurgess Dent, on January 29, 1993.
Alvin was educated in Norfolk City Public Schools. He received his Bachelor of Art from Thomas Edison State College and Masters Degree in Management and Leadership from Webster's University. He enlisted in the United States Army on March 6, 1984. He retired as a Command Sergeant Major on December 31, 2012. While serving on active duty, Alvin completed tours in Iraq, Kuwait, Hungary, Egypt, Germany, Korea, as well as multiple tours stateside. He was a well decorated soldier, and he received the following awards during his time of service; the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medals w/3rd oak leaf cluster and Army Accommodation Medal, w/ Silver Oakleaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal w/Silver Oakleaf Cluster, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Air Assault Badge, to name a few.
Alvin Jones was a member of the Gospel Service at Fort Bliss, where he served as part of the Hospitality Ministry. He was a loving husband and father. His commitment to his family's well-being knew no bounds. Alvin had a pleasing personality, and he never met anyone that he didn't inspire to be great. He had a passion for the youth. He coached various youth sports. He was a board member of the West Texas Blazers Basketball, and he helped established the A&A All the Way Foundation for Youth. Through this foundation, he spearheaded a bike drive, a turkey drive and was working on a shoe drive for underprivileged families in El Paso, Texas, before his demise. He was instrumental in coordinating three football camps for youth ages 5 to 17.
He was preceded in death by his father William Jones. He leaves to cherish is memories his mother Mary McInnis, his wife Vurgess Jones, two daughters Alicia Brown of Norfolk, VA, and Chelsi’rae Walker of El Paso, TX. Three sons Xaier (Alisha) Miles of Glendale, AZ, Alvin Jones Jr. and Aaron Jones of El Paso, Tx; six grandchildren, Skylar Murphy, Terryn Brown, Fe’lice Brown, Brixton Miles, London Miles, and Aaron Jones Jr.; Four sisters, Mary Wilson and Cora (Nathaniel) Jones-Leary of Norfolk, VA, Barbara Ann Jones of New York, and Lisa (Joseph) Lewis, of Clarksville, TN, two brothers Jerome (Sandra) Jones of Norfolk, VA, Montreal (Erika) Newton of El Paso, TX; three godchildren Brent Butler, Alonna Medley, and Julianna Tyson; Long life childhood friends Pat Forbes and Michael Boykins; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
