Luis was in my only set of students I taught 2 years in a row (7th & 8th). In so many ways he made me a better first time teacher with his deep care about his friends, his passion for anything he loved, and the ability to make even a stressed out teacher laugh daily. He let me push him to grow. To say I was proud of the man he became is never going to be enough.

To know his light is lost to us doesn’t mean he hasn’t left something glowing in each of the people he loved while with us.

Every day without Emilio was a day missed, as he held a special place as a son, my first love, best friend, rock, motivation in life, and source of happiness..

The times spent with him were the happiest of my life, and his legacy of kindness, determination, and humor will forever be cherished.

The more I conversed with my son and read his letters, the realization dawned on me that he was evolving into my hero. He skillfully pointed out my flaws with assertiveness and love, simultaneously showering me with compliments and affection that became the most cherished aspects of my existence. My son's words meant everything to me. I wish I could hear those words again.

I love you son.

As he grew older, he developed a passion for reading motivational and inspirational books, particularly those by David Goggins. Through numerous letters and emails, he enthusiastically shared the impact these books had on his daily routine.

In June of 2000, Emilio realized his childhood dream by joining the military, specifically the navy. His dedication and hard work led to success, and in December 2022, Emilio married the love of his life, Elaine, who stood by him through challenging boot camp times and deployments. Stationed in Japan for two years, Emilio explored most of Asia, generously sharing his rich experiences in letters and emails, passionately detailing diverse aspects of food, culture, and impactful moments, all while expressing his profound love for family.

In loving memory of Luis Emilio Mancera, born on September 17, 2001, and departed suddenly on January 8, 2024. Emilio is survived by his mother Maribel Montes-Skinner, father Steve Skinner, sister Jocelyne Goddard, papá José Luis Mancera and spouse Elaine Mancera.

From the moment Emilio entered this world, he exuded perfection – a beautiful, well-behaved, and loving soul. His early years overflowed with joy as he built forts and played with toys. Emilio's character blossomed through his passion for sports, including baseball, soccer, martial arts, and boxing, instilling in him discipline and resilience.

As a child, my son's favorite activities were watching superhero movies; going to the movies, and having long conversations during a nice dinner were our favorite mom and son dates. Discussing our goals, future plans, and thoughts in life were cherished moments.

Described by friends and family as responsible, hardworking, kind, humble, loving, smart, a great friend, an excellent advisor, funny, and possessing outstanding moral values, Emilio was truly exceptional. His unwavering determination and motivation were evident in everything he pursued.

In addition to his remarkable qualities, Emilio was always willing to help and never gave up. His compassionate nature extended beyond borders; whenever I, as his mom, took him to another country, Emilio made sure to lend a helping hand to those in need, even when his income wasn't abundant. 
During hard work, he tirelessly cheered on others, motivating them to persevere, even when he himself was exhausted. Quitting was not in his vocabulary.

Emilio's passion for fitness shone brightly, and going to the gym was one of his favorite activities. Despite his commitment to a healthy lifestyle, he truly enjoyed food. Chipotle held the top spot in his heart, followed closely by In-N-Out. His humor revealed itself in his food choices – ordering four double doubles but skipping the fries to watch his calories.
