Dr. Earle H. Crummy, Jr. longtime educator in El Cajon, died Monday, March 2 of heart failure after a brief illness. He was born in Whittier, CA, the son of earle, Sr. and Llora Ashleigh Crummy. Raised with his younger brother Charles Phillip in Montebello, CA, he went on to become an Eagle Scout. He attended Whittier College, majoring in history and minoring in speech. He completed a master's degree in education at CA State University, Fullerton; as well as a doctoral degree in education at Northern AZ University in Flagstaff.
He married his first and only true love, Dr. Dorothy E. Crummy, on July 15, 1967, and together they raised their two sons in El Cajon and ALPINE. He was an active member of Foothills United Methodist Church, bringing first the Cub Scout Pack, and then forming Boy Scout Troop 362 there. He is survived by sons Steven Earle Crummy of El Cajon, and Scott Phillip Crummy, daughter-in-law Amy Martin Crummy & their son, the light of his life, grandson Carson Iver Crummy, Of Descanso, CA.
Dr. Crummy began his teaching career at Needles High School in 1966. After his marriage, he taught and was activities director at both Artesia High School in Artesia, CA and Foothill High School in Tustin, CA. Wanting to become and administrator, he was hired by the El Cajon Valley Union School District in El Cajon, CA. in 1974, where he was vice-principal at Emerald Junior High (now middle school) for several years, before returning to the classroom. Dr. Crummy was one of the first teachers recruited for the new Hillsdale Middle School when it opened. He particularly loved middle-school aged students, and kept them motivated through his use of "Crummy Bucks" which they earned for various positive behaviors. He was part of a group of faculty leading 8th graders on the trips to Washington, D.C. and New York City for several years. Earle also taught college classes for future teachers (curriculum Design and Instructional Methods) for National University for several years. He retired from teaching in 2004.
Earle loved woodworking and was able to build just about anything from wooden toys to furniture. He loved his family with all his heart and was probably the kindest, gentlest and most genuinely good man we've ever known.
A public memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Foothills United Methodist Church in La Mesa, CA (www.foothillsumc.com).
