Sheila was the only child of Dr. Angus and Laura McGugan, the loving wife of Dr. Alf Petersen and the caring mother of Wendy MacDonald (Ken), Joan Turcotte (Rick), Carol Petersen (Tad Kaczmarek), and Lorna Stephen (John). Also remembering her are her grandchildren Kate MacDonald (Brad Julicher), Kristine MacDonald (Jeremy Caissie), Graham Parsons (Kaija), Scott Parsons, Katrina Kaczmarek, Hayley Stephen (Andrew Dil), Marla Stephen, Brett Stephen (Karen Salazar). Sheila trained as a nurse in the early 1950s at the University of Alberta Hospital and later in life completed her B.Ed. at the University of Alberta. She used knowledge and skills from both areas of study in her devoted support of her family and community. As both a leader and as a front-line volunteer, Sheila enjoyed her roles with Girl Guides, the Edmonton Nature Centre Foundation, Universiade 83, the University of Alberta Faculty Women’s Club, Friends of Rutherford House, and the Edmonton YWCA. She was proud to be a lifelong Edmontonian, enjoyed local history, nature, travelling, research, writing, and volunteering. She travelled the world with Alf, living in Nigeria and visiting every continent except Antarctica.
Friendship was very important to Sheila and she treasured her dear friends from childhood, Garneau and University High School, nursing school, family life, the potluck group, Dalum/Drumheller, Alf’s workplace, volunteering, and the neighborhoods where she lived, including her condominium.
