Some of the best moments of my visits to Canada were spending time with my cousins.  Sam was wonderful to hang out with, and despite the time between visits having a welcoming cousin around my age made the initially daunting travel into something I looked forward to.  He was a great person to be around, and I'm sad to lose someone far too soon.

Your passing is sad. Unexpected. Painful.
A harsh reminder that time is short. 
That we never know when our words will be our last.
That the flesh is soft, life is cruel, and the spirit is so easily distracted.
I think you would want people to reach out to eachother, to remind one other that we are not burdens. We are loved, needed, seen and heard. 
That we are important to the experience of others. 
This reality is forever altered by your absence.

Hey man, I heard the  news, I'm so sorry. I'll never forget the countless memories we have  summer after summer at camp. you were my best friend  there. I was always so excited to see you again. I'm sorry we never hung out much these last few years. I wish we would've planned to meet up in Edmonton again.  its funny, I'd finally gotten myself a good enough pc to start playing games with you again and gotten myself a car to visit you with but I always let life get in the way and I will always regret that, I'll never forget when you and Alex walked cam and I through how to install terraria so we could all play it together. and I'm sad ill never get to do that with you again. or when you got me into RWBY and you bought me the RWBY video game on my birthday  when it came out cause you saw it on my Wishlist. I was so looking forward to sampling some of your brews someday.  I hope you know that ill never forget you. and ill miss you forever. Good by Sandstorm Sam

Rest in peace nephew...you left us far too soon.  I wish I had the chance to get to know you more as a grown up.  Most of my memories are of the younger version.

One of the memories about Sam that stands out the most to me was shortly after the hospital stay.  I am not sure if it was days after or months after.  I re,ember everybody was worried and anxious and there was this happy smiley kid that just wanted to play ball hockey with his uncle and brother  in the basement.  Just being around him that night made me feel better and I think it made everybody less anxious.
That infectious feeling good was a common theme every time I saw him.  The world needs more Sam's in it.  I think we were all blessed to have had this one in ours...even if it was for far too brief a time.

Rest In Peace . God has taken you far to soon. Know that as a friend of Brandy and Michael , I will do my best to comfort them and do whatever I can to help in this trying time. Although I never met you, your parents are so proud of you and your accomplishments. Know that each and every day you will thought of. May you be peaceful in the hands of God.

Sam was infinitely lovable. He was truly someone who everyone was better for having encountered. 

I keep thinking about the often repeated phrase "May his memory be a blessing," and that is so true of Sam. He was thoroughly a blessing;  genuinely without artifice and seeking a positive connection with others. He was easy to be around, and hard not to love. The sunshine he spread around is something that stays with you. 

I wanted to upload this photo to share with his family and friends. 

I met Sam in high school and we became friends sometime afterward. I always enjoyed talking and hanging out with him in Onoway and in Edmonton about anything and our passions, what we wanted to do in life, etc. 

While we stopped hanging out due to the pandemic and didn’t talk as often because of our post secondary studies,… I am going to miss Sam a lot.

After reminiscing with some of his friends that I was friends with, thinking about the good and fun memories, Sam is someone that left a mark in our lives that won’t ever be replaced. 

His passion and knowledge in brewing was clear and impressive. Sam gave the best anime recommendations that to this day I really love. I enjoyed hanging out at video game stores and talking about our favourites games or talking about DND. Sam always made me laugh with his memes or really cool AMVs he would show me on YouTube. And I always enjoyed seeing him at Animethon when we had the chance. 

As mentioned from others- for those who never got to meet Sam missed out on a true friend that really cared about his friends.

It was always a good day seeing Sam at school. He is one of the nicest and most understanding people I have ever met. My condolences to the family and friends for the loss of someone so amazing. And my condolences to those that never got to meet such a wonderful person.

Sam… one of the absolute nicest people I have honestly ever met. I’m gonna miss ya Sam! I loved being able to train Kung fu with him. I won’t forget the hours we put into each other just to build each other up. Hanging out at the tournament with Sam and his family was truly a wonderful experience. I’m so sorry to hear of this.

Such great reviews for Sam's College Beer

At the end of a family gathering at Sam's grandparents' acreage in 2001, we were leaving, so I asked Dino (then known as Amanda) if they (Dino) would like to give Sam a hug. Dino looked unsure, so I asked Sam if he would like to give Dino a hug. He cheerfully complied and even came back for a second hug because I wasn't sure if I had caught the first one on camera. (This was before most of us had digital ones.)

Sam has been our neighbor and friend for years and as a family, we remember him as always being friendly, so kind and generous and willing to help out. He was willing to play with our kids when he was younger even though they were younger than him and they remember his energy that never seemed to run out and his kindness to them. We have so many precious memories of Sam that it is hard to choose which ones to  focus on. Some of them are seeing him walk over through the gate in the fence that we made just for him, the many conversations we had with him about all kinds of things, how he was always willing to look after our animals when we went away, walking with him around the subdivision, the time one of our friends pranked us by putting a rooster in our yard and it it got into  the Day's yard and he helped us as we frantically tried to catch that crazy bird for hours!!!, hearing he was going off to college and how excited and proud we were of him, and seeing him just a few weeks ago on one of his walks and hearing he had graduated and was moving to Edmonton. Sam, you are wonderful person and we are thankful that we had the chance to be part of your life and we hope you knew this. We will miss you so much. Brandy, Alex, and Michael, we are heartbroken for you at the terrible loss of Sam. 

While I only knew Sam a short while, I have a fond memory of a bunch of us from the Brewing Program going to a karaoke night in Olds last spring. We had a great time singing songs together on stage and conversing at the table over drinks. I remember Sam ordered a dessert and was happy to share it with everyone. It was one of the best times of that semester, and a night that I will never forget. My deepest condolences to the Day family for this tremendous loss.

If Sam was anything, he was friendly, unassuming and just wanted to be where folks were doing stuff.  Here he is at a 1st year Meet n'Greet at Mr. Mike's in Olds in September 2021.  Just getting in there and being one of the crew.  Sam never was one to stick just to the folks in his own year...he moved seamlessly between both.  Everyone knew him.  Peter.


Sam joined us in our yearly solstice celebration where we stand raw eggs on their end.  Sam was the first of us to get his egg to stand.  In fact he had a second one standing by the time another of us completed this task.
Then he became our photographer.  
He shared one of his “Back from the Dead” beers with our friends and explained how he made it.  It was enjoyed by all present.  He was very knowledgeable on this topic having recently graduated from Olds Brewmaster and Brewery Operations 2 year program.
Sam will be greatly missed.

Sam was always a kind and outwardly positive person from what I've known, and in my interactions with him in classes. It was always entertaining being around him and he always held a high spirit. In my first year we both lived on campus and would frequently meet and chat on the way to the cafeteria, he always had something to say to spark a conversation and I really appreciated those moments. He also had such a high regard for cream ales above all, but not in just words, talent also. Sam would have made an excellent brewer going forward and I'll regret never being able to see where he and his craftmanship would have lead. I wish my condolences and all the best to his family in this tough time.

I had the great pleasure of teaching Sam and echo all the wonderful comments that his classmates and instructors have been saying about him. 

From the moment I met Sam, I knew he was extraordinarily sincere. His openness and vulnerability, not to mention the empathy, consideration, and sly humour he showed to me and all of his classmates were instrumental in breaking down barriers and creating an instructional experience I will cherish and remember. 

Sam really truly cared about people and it shone through in every interaction. 

To his family and friends, thank you for letting this gentle and genuine soul into my life. Getting to know and connecting with a young person like Sam is more than any educator could ever hope for.

No time to say goodbye.  A loved family member gone too soon!

I met Sami at the start of his life.  As a student in my kindergarten class, he was a shy, slight, sweet boy with a ready smile.  He felt a special connection to our phonics mascot “Sammy Snake” for obvious reasons.  
When Sami was diagnosed with leukaemia we missed his daily presence in the classroom and watched as he fought his brave fight.  His parents and brother, Alex were his constant encouragement.
He returned to us as a cancer conquerer, ready for the next challenge.  Although the family moved to the Edmonton area from Mississauga, I’m grateful to have stayed in touch through his wonderful mom over all of these years.  Sami, God wrote your precious name in my heart years ago.  I will hold it there forever. 

I have so many wonderful stories of Sam, but there were so many things in the beginning that made me have a soft spot for him. In the first year of school we were  brew partners. Everyday he showed up happy to be there, ready to work and learn. His sweet, kind nature instantly won me over.
 Then I watch him grow over the two years which was such an amazing thing. From quiet and didn't say to much unless he had a question, to right in there answer questions and having witty remarks to many comments and jokes both in class and in the brewery. I'm so grateful for our time together, from the late night Google chats, brew days, and social outings. He was truly an absolute joy to be around. He will never be forgotten, and will always be missed.

I remember that Sam was ALWAYS in my class...and I mean always!  It was often just the two of us and it did seem a bit unnecessary for us both to be sitting there while everyone else was online...anyway, one day, I decided to lecture from my office upstairs.  Shortly afterwards, Sam fairly sternly let me know that this was the 'dealeo'!  Henceforth, I'd go down to see if he was in class...if not, I'd feel I had 'permission' to go back to my office...but more often than not, there he was.  And so we both sat there...am I the only person who ever got told off by Sam?  Maybe, but it makes me smile to think of him sitting there patiently waiting for every single class to begin. I missed him after he finished school, and I will miss him so much more now.  Peter.



I remember this one time in marketing class near the end of the semester. I was sitting in front of Sam in class during the lecture and as our teacher turned around and did a double take in our direction with this look of "is this really happening?". I was a bit confused so I looked behind me. Sam being the character he was had brought an entire block of cheese to class and kept it wrapped in his hoodie pocket. He would just take a bite from it and put it back in his pocket. We all knew his love of cheese was strong but watching our teachers reaction of pure confusion was priceless.
Still can't believe he is gone. My condolences to his family. He will be missed.
