Fred was predeceased by his eldest son Ernest in 1998, and leaves behind his beloved wife Charlotte, children Jim, Karin (Randy) and Ron (Elaine), nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Fred was born July 19, 1929 in Hanover, Germany, growing up in difficult times during the World War. At the age of 15 he pursued an education in Diesel Engine Mechanics. By age 22, with new knowledge and determination, he embarked on a journey to Canada in 1951. Fred began his career working on the Trans Mountain Pipeline in B.C. He made frequent trips back to Germany to visit family and friends. During one of these visits he met Charlotte, the love of his life. On May 5, 1954, Charlotte arrived in Halifax by ship, and was met by Fred who drove across Canada to greet her. They married that same day, starting a remarkable 70-year life together ❤.
Fred and Charlotte settled in Edmonton, purchasing a home, where they raised their four children.
Fred's busy career as a Heavy Duty Mechanic in the oil and pipeline industry often took him away from home, but nevertheless he prioritized family time. The family enjoyed countless picnics, camping, and fishing trips throughout Alberta and B.C. The most memorable family adventure was for three long months in the summer of 1966, driving their 1965 Ford 'Woody' Country Squire Station Wagon across Canada to Halifax. Both the family and their car embarked on a ship voyage across the Atlantic to visit with family and explore Europe.
From 1956 to 1975 Fred contributed to the construction of the Trans Canada Pipeline, stretching from Alberta to Montreal. In 1975, during the Alaska Pipeline project, he designed and built the world's largest ditch digging machine, while working for Banister Pipelines. His ingenuity earned him three patents, and one of his machines was proudly displayed at the Calgary Oil Show in 1978.
In retirement Fred and Charlotte became avid golfers, joining the Riverside Seniors Golf League. They travelled with friends throughout Alberta and B.C. golfing, camping and creating lasting memories.
Fred's pride in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was unwavering. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication and innovation. His work on Earth is done, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Love always & forever.
