The family of Edward Hahn is saddened by the loss of their husband, father, and grandfather on November 8, 2022. Ed’s approach to cancer mimicked his approach to many of his undertakings – determined, stoic, and understated with much consideration for his family and others around him.
Ed was born on June 4, 1937 in the prairie town of Grenfell, Saskatchewan, the youngest of 10 brothers and sisters. He showed his industrious nature even as a young boy, delivering kindling, wood, and coal to elderly neighbors during the winter. As he became a young man, he delivered meat for the local butcher, working after school and all day on Saturdays for the princely sum of $7 a week. Edward moved to Edmonton in 1955, articling with the accounting firm of Harris, Fingarson, and Company while simultaneously completing his Chartered Accountant designation at Queen’s University by correspondence.
After attaining his CA, Ed went to work for the Houston, Texas-based Reed Roller Bit company that manufactured drilling bits for the oil industry. Ed met Mavis Atkins in October 1963, and like any good accountant, quickly realized the value of what he had, marrying Mavis on May 16, 1964. Ed and Mavis lived briefly in Houston before returning to Edmonton, and during this time welcomed their daughters, Wendy in 1967 and Stacy in 1968.
Ed worked in public practice until 1976 when he joined Chieftain Development, a well-respected and growing oil and gas company based in Edmonton. Ed had a 22 year career at Chieftain where he was known for his integrity, work ethic and quick wit, and where he rose to the role of Senior Vice President of Finance, retiring in 1999.
In his personal life, Ed was a voracious reader and an avid gardener. Visitors to his large vegetable garden would remark on the arrow straight rows and the uncanny absence of weeds. Summer dinners typically included a perfectly barbequed steak, a bounty of produce, and at least one glass of scotch or red wine. Ed and Mavis enjoyed many wonderful trips, notably cruises on the Danube and down the Amazon, as well as their yearly respite from Edmonton’s winter weather in Maui each January. If you asked Ed though, his favorite destination was Loon Lake, Saskatchewan, where he and Mavis spent part of their honeymoon, where they vacationed with their girls every summer, and where he built a family cabin in 2001. There have been many memories made there and it will always be a special place where we remember him.
Ed is survived by his loving family, wife Mavis, daughters Wendy (Randy) Dupree and Stacy (Harry) Myers, grandchildren Alexandra (Matt) and Dawson, sister Alma, best friend Bill Grace and numerous nieces and other family who have been a great comfort over the past several months.
The family would like to thank the staff of the University of Alberta Hospital ENT and ICU wards for their incredible dedication to Ed’s care. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army of Alberta or the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta.
