It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden departure of Douglas Murray Smart, cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Surrounded by loved ones, Doug passed away on February 15, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and boundless passion for learning. Doug was born on January 31, 1947, in Smithers, British Columbia, to Laurie and Dorothy Smart. He grew up in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, alongside his sister Gerri (Jack) and brother Jim (Marilyn). Sadly, he was predeceased by his parents and his infant son, Brian Smart.
In 1978, Doug married the love of his life, Brenda Smart, and they shared 45 wonderful years together. Doug's devotion to Brenda was unwavering, and their love served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Together, they raised two children, Derek (Robin) and Kari Ann (Trent), who brought immeasurable joy into their lives. Doug was an adoring grandfather to Parker, Pierson, Onyx, and Opal, cherishing every moment spent with them whether it be building Lego on the living room floor or digging for potatoes in the backyard garden.
Doug's passion for education led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science and Education at the University of Alberta. He dedicated his entire 30-year career to teaching science at Paul Kane High School, where he left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of his students. In recognition of his dedication, the biology classroom was affectionately named the "Smart Room" upon his retirement.
A man of boundless curiosity and talent, Doug pursued numerous hobbies throughout his life. From mastering ultralight aviation to restoring antique cars and tractors, sculpting stone, gardening, landscaping, and delving into the intricacies of the stock market, Doug approached each endeavor with passion and skill. His love of learning was infectious, and he generously shared his knowledge with family, friends, and strangers alike.
A celebration of Doug's life will be held at Memories Funeral Home, 13403 St. Albert Trail Edmonton, AB on Friday, February 23, 2024 at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Mazankowski Heart Institute (www.givetouhf.ca/cardiac-care/) in memory of Doug.
Let us cherish the life of Douglas Murray Smart, a remarkable soul whose presence graced our lives, and may his legacy of love and wisdom continue to inspire us all.
