Christopher Kuna

Despite the valiant efforts performed by the Bushkill Fire and Ambulance Departments, Christopher T. Kuna, 64, of Bushkill passed away on Monday, June 19th 2017 from complications related to heart failure. He went out on his own terms in his own home, stubborn to the very end.

He is survived by his wife Michele nee Wilson, his three children, Meghan Hamershock of Emmaus, Jolene Kuna of Philadelphia, Alexander Kuna of Bushkill and his three grandchildren Jayden Hamershock (12), Meadow Hamershock (11) and Paul Hamershock (4).

Born in Elizabeth, NJ to Theodore Joseph Kuna and Apolonia “Pearl” Loutinsky Kuna, Chris spent the first couple years of his life in Maricaibo, Venezuela where his Polish father worked as an engineer. After coming back to the states, the family first lived in Rahway, NJ and then finally settled down in a big ranch set beside the Bushkill Creek.

Chris attended East Stroudsburg High School, which after much mischief, graduated in 1970. While working on his associates degree from LCCC in Criminal Justice, Chris would end up going to a random party in Bushkill which would lead to him meeting a woman that would eventually change his life forever. In a good way. That woman's name was Michele Wilson and they were going to get married. This past April they celebrated 39 wonderful years together. They would go on to build their legacy on the hill, including three children, three grandchildren and a dream log cabin in the woods aptly named The Kuna Ranch.

Employed by PennDOT for 34 years, Chris worked tirelessly to keep your roads safely plowed in the winter and your state transportation department's vehicles well air conditioned in the Summer. He had an eagle eye for abandoned tools on the side of the road and enjoyed nothing more than bringing home the occasional snake in his lunch box to show (read: scare) his kids. He loved Smart Food popcorn almost as much as he loved explosives, but always made sure to save the last bit of the bag for his kids to enjoy as a reward at the end of the day for helping him take off his work boots – the popcorn, not the explosives. When given the chance to retire early, the door barely had a chance to close before Chris was over the threshold and at home enjoying old re-runs of The Andy Griffith Show.

This spring he celebrated his 50 year anniversary as a volunteer member of the Bushkill Fire Company, with his brothers and sisters from a whole bunch of other mothers and misters. His wife, children and grandchildren were there too. In addition to rushing into countless burning buildings, he ran ambulance with his wife Michele in their early years, rushed to many a car accident and fire call. All in an effort to save lives while risking his own in the process. There was nothing Chris wouldn't do for anyone who asked. He might have complained about it with a few colorful choice words, but it would have always been to your face and never done with one bit of malice. Chris had a sense of humor that was hard to match. If a problem couldn't be solved with a big long hug, it was almost always solved with a well-timed joke, after an exhuberant “talking to”, or flatulance optional. He didn't enjoy photos being taken of him, and the ones not sneakily captured by his kids with their “damn phones”, were often taken with one finger sticking up. You are free to guess which finger.

Chris loved in this order, his family, his god, his country, his guns and the perfect cut of venison. You lived your life loud and full and you will be missed beloved husband, father and friend.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at The Church of St. John’s, 5171 Milford Rd, East Stroudsburg, PA 18302 with Father Gregory Reichlen Officiating. Burial will follow at The Sand Hill Cemetery, 1Sand Hill Road, East Stroudsburg, PA 18302.
