She was born in New Site, Alabama, to Hal and Hattie Carter. She was married to Ralph Thomas until they were parted by his death in 1984. Her parents, an infant son, and her sister Bernie also preceded her in death.
Ralph’s work as an engineer at TVA brought them to Chattanooga where they lived in East Ridge raising their children, Martha, Harriet, and Andrew. After moving to Chattanooga, she worked as a teller at Hamilton National bank before leaving to become a mother and homemaker to her family.
Laverne was active for many years in children’s Sunday School and WMU at East Lake Baptist Church, East Ridge Baptist Church and Crosspath. She was a wonderful cook who excelled at southern cooking and also a talented seamstress.
As her mobility declined she moved to the Alexian Village. She met a new group of dear friends and particularly enjoyed their company at lunch and movie nights. Until recently, she continued some sewing and enjoyed helping friends with clothing alterations.
She is survived by her children Martha (Don), Harriet (Rob), and Andrew (Kim); grandchildren Jeffrey, Jennifer, Mary, Alexander, Iain, Amy, Zach, Eric, and Drew: great-grandchildren Blaklee, Luca, Sylvia, and Jocelyn, and by her sisters Modene, and Lenora, and brother H.L.
A Celebration of Laverne's Life will be held on January 9, 2020 at 12:00 Noon at Chattanooga Funeral Home-East Chapel with Pastor William Jacques officiating. Family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11:30 AM. The burial will be held immediately following the service at Chattanooga National Cemetery at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alexian Village Scholarship Fund 437 Alexian Way, Signal Mountain, TN 37377.
The family wishes to thank her doctors and nurses at Memorial and at Hospice for their care during her illness. We want to send a very special thanks to Dr. Moody, Melissa, and his staff for many years of compassionate care. Also, thanks to her friends at Alexian who watched over her.
