June Holland McEwen died peacefully January 1, 2022. Born July 6, 1930, in Roane County, TN, June attended public schools there and in Knoxville. She graduated magna cum laude and earned a Masters’ degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Ms. McEwen lived most of her adult life in Chattanooga.
Married 62 years to Dr. Jack H. McEwen, she is survived by two children: Melanie McEwen Dover and Jack Jeffrey (Meredith) McEwen; two granddaughters: Emily Dover (Stuart) Saylor; Rebecca Dover (Jacob) Wilson; two grandsons: Sean Joseph Jackson (Lance Hartung) McEwen and Austin Nicklaus McEwen; and three great-grandchildren: Holland and Luke Saylor and Everett Wilson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack H. McEwen; her parents Nell McClure Holland and Thomas Ferrell Holland of Kingston, TN; her son-in-law Randall Warren Keith Dover; and by her brothers Ellis F. Holland, Larry L. Holland, and Robert E. Holland. She is survived by her sister Nina Ruth Holland Sharp and her brother David Reed Holland of Dandridge, TN and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to life-long involvement in Baptist churches and ministries, she taught high school English, Bible, and Art History, as well as college English. For fifteen years she was assistant director of the University Honors Program at UTC. Her many community activities included volunteering with the Partnership for Families, Children and Adults, and the Chattanooga Hamilton County Library. June was a founder of Baptist Women in Ministry and served for many years on the board of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty. She taught the Waters Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Chattanooga for over twenty years. But the role that gave her the most joy in her life was that of Gran-June. Kindness and compassion were the guiding lights of her life.
Due to her lifelong commitment to the welfare of everyone around her, she will be buried in a private graveside ceremony with immediate family only during this time of pandemic. Arrangements are through Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel.
