James McIver “Jim” Godfrey, 90, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2020. He was a very active member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church having served in their nursing home ministry, been on the missions board, been a member of United Methodist Men and worked the church wide barbeque. Jim was a Charter member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was born in Sanford, NC but grew up in Winston-Salem, NC. Jim had been employed by Norfolk & Western/Norfolk Southern Railway where he retired as District Sales Manager and worked in Bristol, VA, Jacksonville, AL and Columbus, GA before retiring to Chattanooga. He had also volunteered at the Community Kitchen. Jim was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving two times, once at the end of WWII and was honorably discharged as a Sgt.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Sparks Godfrey and his parents, Wilbur Phillip and Margaret McIver Wicker Godfrey.
Survivors include his two daughters, Linda Godfrey (Glenn) Farmer of Ringgold, GA and Donna Godfrey (Steve) Ensley of Lafayette, GA; two grandchildren, Madeline Ensley and McIver Ensley; one sister, Eleanor Godfrey.
The family would like to thank the staff of Rosewood Assisted Living and the nurses from Preferred Care at Home for their loving care.
Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Monday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road with the Rev. Randy Martin officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-3 PM Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be 2 PM Wednesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
