Gus graduated from McCallie School and Emory University, where he majored in mathematics and computer science. He was a gifted mathematician and systems analyst with a productive career in the eye care industry, primarily with Novartis/Alcon.
Gus enjoyed outdoor life and photography. As an avid dog lover, he enjoyed taking his pets hiking, rafting, and camping and on many beach vacations to St. George Island in the Florida panhandle. His current "pups", Abe and Sarah, will miss him.
He was an active and highly regarded member of the traditional knife making community. Gus was a loyal friend to many. He will be greatly missed and long remembered.
He was predeceased by his parents Angela and Nicholas Kalanzis and his cousin Connie Sloan Lee.
He is survived by his brother Peter Kalanzis (Nina), niece Melinda, cousins George Sloan (Edie), Ron Lee, Stephanie Richter (Eric), and Lydia Fox (Jerry). He was Uncle Gus to his five cousins once removed.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 26 at Chattanooga Funeral Home East Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 27 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Chattanooga. A burial will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park in Red Bank, TN.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
