She was born on May 16, 1940 in Green Bay Wisconsin to LaVerne C Barteck and Bruce Schultz. She married Richard Kirkpatrick in 1965 and had 2 children, Lori (Dean) Thompson of East Peoria, IL, and Robert (Jackie) Kirkpatrick of Granite City, IL.
She later had a life partner, Karen Mullin who had 2 children, Todd (Wendy) Mullin of Oceanside, CA and Andrea (Anthony) Cornett of Yuma, AZ. She has 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Lynn was a lifelong learner but took her first college course at the age of 40. Ultimately, she earned a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cincinnati in 1995 at the age of 54. During her time there, she became a fan of UC Bearcats basketball and watched the NCAA tournament every year.
Early in her academic career, she taught at UC, Xavier University, and Northern Kentucky University. For her next role, Lynn was hired as department head over Psychology, Sociology, and Social Work at Southwest State University in Marshall, MN, a role that led to her appointment as Academic Dean for the school. Her final official role was as Executive Director the Tri-State Graduate Center in Sioux City, IA. In Sioux City, Lynn also taught classes at Briarcliff University and Morningside University and was actively involved with Rotary and the Humane Society.
In addition to co-writing and editing “Enduring Issues In Sociology,” Karen and Lynn owned Paradoxx Enterprise, LLC, which focused on grant writing for non-profits and real estate investing.
She was very active in barbershop singing as was her mother. She joined Sweet Adelines at age 16 and sang for many years, with her last chorus The Heart of Illinois in East Peoria. She then sang in multiple quartets in Harmony Inc. with one reaching second place in an international competition. She also followed many of the men’s quartets with her favorite quartet Vocal Spectrum.
She was preceded in death by both parents, husband, and her life partner.
A memorial service will be held Monday, June 17, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria, with visitation one hour prior to service. Chaplain Amy Grethey will officiate.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to TAPS.
