He was born May 8, 1938 in Peoria to William and Grace (Seward) Skaggs. He married Judy Parry December 1, 1957 in Peoria. She survives along with five daughters: Debbie (Bob) Necessary of Groveland, Deanna (Marty) Smith of East Peoria, Lynda (Tom) Brown of East Peoria, Lori Skaggs of Peoria, and Lisa Skaggs of Peoria. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Kelly (Donnie) Jolly, Stacey (Joel) Wilson, Chelsey Brown, Austin Brown, and four great-grandchildren: Bryson and Brynley Wilson, Delsy and Kaden Jolly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, Mark Brian Skaggs, and two brothers: Emmett and William Skaggs.
John first worked for Colonial Baking Co. in Peoria. He later worked for Caterpillar, Inc. Following his time at Caterpillar he owned and operated Meineke Car Care in Normal and Pekin.
He was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria. He also was a member of the Grandview Masonic Lodge # 1112 AF & AM, the Shrine and the Consistory.
John loved spending time at his home in the Lake of the Ozarks. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, was an avid toy tractor collector, and was proud of his 1960 Chevy Impala convertible. He also volunteered at the Wheels of Time Museum in Peoria.
Visitation will be Sunday November 16, 2014 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria. There will be a Masonic Service at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Mike Shirey will officiate. Entombment will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Peoria, Illinois.
