He was born in Olean, New York, on December 31, 1950 to David Engle Boyd and Cynthia (Dawe) Boyd. He attended school in New York through his sophomore year of high school. He finished high school in Houston, Texas, and graduated from North Shore Senior High in 1969. He remained in Houston to attend Rice University, where he received a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following graduation, he briefly worked for Standard Oil in the San Francisco Bay area, but spent the bulk of his career working in utility regulation for the Michigan Public Service Commission.
Tim was married to his wife of 41 years, Jeanne Marie (Dager) Boyd on November 5, 1983 in Lansing, Michigan, and they moved to their first and only home in Okemos, Michigan, in August 1984. Tim is survived by his wife and his three children, Gregory (Nancy) Boyd of Ann Arbor, MI, Nicholas (Nicholas Attwater) Boyd of Ferndale, MI, and Amanda (Nicholas) Clark of Farmington Hills, MI. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Caleb Boyd, Ian Attwater-Boyd, and Cameron and Jackson Clark, as well as two granddogs, Nugget and Doc. Tim is also survived by his brother, Robert (Kimberly) Boyd and his sister, Janet (Jack) Worrell. He is predeceased by his parents.
Tim had a great love of nature and enjoyed spending time outdoors. He enjoyed sailing on Cuba Lake in New York, during his college years at Rice, and on Spring Lake in Michigan. He also enjoyed introducing his family to many National Parks as well as spending many hours hiking and at the beach at Hoffmaster State Park near Muskegon.
Tim struggled with mental illness and kidney disease throughout his adult years. He spent six years on dialysis, which took a great physical and mental toll on him. In April of 2014, he was given the gift of a new kidney thanks to a generous woman, aged 43, who decided to become an organ donor, and to the excellent transplant doctors and nurses at the University of Michigan. His family is grateful for the gift that afforded him ten years to watch two of his children get married and to meet and get to know his four grandchildren. His family is also grateful for the caregivers at Bickford Senior Living and at Corsocare Hospice.
The family will have a memorial celebration at a future date.
