It is with solemnity that we announce the passing of Robert Peter Aulston III, aged 75, of East Lansing, Michigan, on the first day of March in the year of our Lord 2024. Born on August 25, 1948, to Robert and Lydia Aulston in New Orleans, Robert's life was a testament to the profound influence of his formative years in Abita Springs, Louisiana, and the steadfast commitment to intellectual pursuits that defined his existence.
Manifesting an early commitment to scholarly endeavors, Robert matriculated from St. Augustine High School in New Orleans in 1965. Thereafter, he embarked upon an academic odyssey, culminating in a triumvirate of degrees: a Bachelor's degree from Boston University in 1969, followed by successive academic laurels from Harvard Business School in 1971, and Harvard Law School in 1974. His scholarly pursuits were complemented by his membership in the esteemed Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Exhibiting an entrepreneurial spirit, Robert adeptly steered various venture capital initiatives, alongside his proprietorship of several restaurants situated on the south side of Chicago. Additionally, his proficient legal acumen found expression in his role as a corporate tax attorney, deftly navigating the intricate labyrinth of commercial endeavors. As Robert would often remark, things unfolded as they should.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Robert was a man of multifaceted interests. A connoisseur of literature and chess, he manifested his intellectual proclivities with aplomb. His mentorship of young minds attested to his commitment to fostering academic aspirations. Reveling in life's simple pleasures, he found relaxation in a good cigar paired with Jack and Coke, and solace in the embrace of Vanilla Haagen Dazs ice cream. Music, particularly the soulful melodies of Motown, provided him joy, with a special affinity for The Temptations and the timeless classic "My Girl."
Robert frequently illuminated social gatherings with his engaging presence, imbuing them with conviviality and warmth. His penchant for narrative recollection encompassed anecdotes from his personal chronicles, including the origins of his moniker "Jackie," the narrative of his railway voyage from the southern climes to the urban landscape of Boston, and the indelible impression left by his inaugural encounter with Bostonian snowfall. Moreover, he regaled listeners with the account of his auspicious union with his wife, Julie. His multifarious experiences and profound predilection for historical inquiry furnished him with a reservoir of knowledge, thereby facilitating engaging discussions on matters of politics or providing a formidable adversary during intellectual duels, such as those instigated by the contemplation of cerebral challenges presented on the televised program Jeopardy.
In the twilight of his years, under the gentle prodding of his spouse, Robert embraced the role of a cosmopolitan traveler and expatriate, traversing the cultural tapestries of Central America, Europe, and the Middle East, fostering enduring friendships across continents.
Robert leaves behind a legacy of love and familial bonds. He was a loving father to Alexander, Damon, and Nicholas Aulston and cherished his role as a godfather to Aubrey Tucker. Robert was the beloved husband of Julie Ferguson for 13 years and was an endearing stepfather to Andrew, Tyler Ray, Madeleine, Erik, and Sophia. He was the esteemed grandfather of Xander, Isabella, Amaya, Naomi, Samaira, and Asa Bea and fervently awaited the forthcoming arrival of his granddaughter, Lenora, whose impending birth filled him with profound joy and anticipation. Additionally, Robert maintained a lasting bond with Martha Tucker, a friend of longstanding.
In the words of Robert's chosen motto, "Vocatus non atque vocatus Deus aderit" - Invoked or not invoked, God is present. May his soul find eternal peace.
