James Russell Matthews III, 86, passed away June 11, 2022, in East Lansing, MI. He was born October 3, 1935, in Washington D.C. to James R. Matthews, Jr and Irene (Kangas) Matthews. He married Carolyn Hill on Nov. 27, 1964, and they spent 50 Years together committed to each other as best friends and partners before her death in 2015. Jim graduated (proudly) from U. of Minnesota – Duluth with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, after serving 6 years in the Marines, much of that time as a Drill Instructor (for those who new Jim – that fits). He was proud to be a Marine (“once a Marine, always a Marine; “Semper Fi”) and his experience strengthened his skills and focus in all aspects of his life.
Jim’s long career with the ASU Group (formerly Michigan Claim Service, Inc.), headquartered in Okemos, MI, started in 1969 as an Insurance Property Adjuster and throughout the years he held various management and executive positions. Jim served as President/CEO of the ASU group from 1981-1996. After his retirement he continued as a Consultant with ASU, serving on its Board of Directors.
Jim was an honest, caring, and incredible mentor. He was a fierce and loyal friend who absolutely had your back, and he got in your face when you needed it. “To be JR’s friend was a privilege and a joy.”
Jim’s passion for golf – playing, studying, and watching it, was well-known. He was quick to give advice on a better grip, stance or swing – and it was good advice.
Jim (and Carolyn) were long time members of Martin Luther Chapel with Jim serving in various capacities including treasurer, financial advisor, and insurance advisor. His faithfulness was evident in his strong interest and care for this all-university ministry.
Jim is survived by a niece, two nephews and many friends.
His ashes will be buried alongside Carolyn’s ashes early this fall at Sunrise Memorial Park in Duluth, Minnesota.
