Richard C. Harvey, Sr., 93, of East Hartford, died on October 29, 2022. Dick was the loving husband of the late Louisa G. Harvey for seventy-one years. He was born in Montpelier, Vermont on September 14, 1929, and was the son of Howard and Madeline Harvey. He was a longtime resident of East Hartford and a member of St. Christopher Church of St. Edmund Campion Parish. Dick earned an Associate Degree in Accounting from the University of Hartford’s Hillyer College where he played college baseball. He was employed as Comptroller for Lincoln Dairy in Hartford. His excellence in accounting led to his appointment as Finance Director for the Town of East Hartford. Dick was immensely proud of East Hartford’s Annual Financial Report by the acknowledgements for achieving national compliance standards.
Dick was a member of the Lions Club, the Jaycees, the Knights of Columbus, and Treasurer of The Elks Club. He chaired the finance committee for years at St. Christopher Church. For over twenty years, he was the Financial Advisor at East Catholic High School in Manchester. Dick was an active member of the Town Democratic Party serving on the East Hartford Town Council for four years. As Chairman of the East Hartford School Building Commission, he oversaw many school building projects. Dick taught adult education and coached youth baseball. A life-long New York Yankees baseball fan, Dick’s passion for baseball led him to promote the development of Little League Baseball in East Hartford during the 1950’s. He served as President of the League and Deputy Commissioner of Little League Baseball’s District 8 in Hartford County.
Dick leaves his sons, Dr. Richard Harvey, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth of East Hartford; Robert Harvey and his wife, Maureen of Framingham, MA; his daughters, Susan Fornabi and her husband, Thomas of Colchester; Sandra Flavell and her husband, James of Cheshire; Sharon Roma and her husband, William of Monroe; and Sheryl Sylvester and her husband, Daniel of South Windsor. Dick also leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition, he is survived by his devoted brother, Howard “Bud” Harvey, Jr. of East Hartford; his sister-in-law, Nancy Temple of South Windsor; his brother-in-law, Robert Temple and his wife, Catherine, of Manchester. He was predeceased by his sister, Jeanne Harvey Krauskas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 10:30 am at St. Christopher Church of St. Edmund Campion Parish, 538 Brewer Street, East Hartford. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, (Section D), Hillside Street, East Hartford. There are no calling hours. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church on Saturday morning. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dick’s memory can be made to East Hartford Little League, P.O. Box 380417, East Hartford, CT 06118 to ensure the continuation of the program he helped to build for the children of East Hartford.
