Martha A. (Luther) McCarthy, 81, of East Hartford and formerly a long-time resident of West Hartford, entered into eternal rest on Friday, (February 25, 2011) surrounded by her loving family at her home. Martha was the devoted wife of 58 years to the late Thomas R. McCarthy. Born in Hartford on December 18, 1929, a daughter of the late Francis L. and Mildred A. (Morrison) Luther, she had resided in West Hartford for 48 years prior to moving to East Hartford over two years ago. Martha was a graduate of Bulkeley High School in Hartford and was employed by the City of Hartford as a clerk in the Bureau of Vital Statistics, retiring in 1987 after 25 years of dedicated service. Martha was a former communicant of St. Mark the Evangelist Church in West Hartford where she was active in various church ministries, especially the church choir for many years. Martha was a talented craftswoman and avid painter, who also loved baking and was especially known for her banana breads and various coffee cakes. Martha is survived by her caring daughter, Karen D. Bonzani and her husband, Peter, of East Hartford with whom she made her home; four special grandchildren, Peter Jr., Kelly, Jenilee, and Jillian. She also leaves three siblings; her beloved dog, Cuddles; several former co-workers and dear friends. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 2 at 10 a.m. from the D'Esopo-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church, May Road/Brandon Road, East Hartford. Burial will follow at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home chapel on Wednesday morning from 9–10 a.m. Memorial contributions in Martha's name may be made to a favorite charity of the donor's choice.
