Born in Fall River, MA on July 30, 1935, a son of the late Emile J. and Blanche Alice (Levesque) Dion, he had been a resident of East Hartford for the past 61 years. Prior to his retirement, Gene was employed for 40 years by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, East Hartford, retiring as an Electronic Engineer. A devout Catholic, Gene was a longtime faithful communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church, East Harford. After his retirement from Pratt & Whitney, Gene was a Director for 17 years of the Charismatic Renewal for the Archdiocese of Hartford. Gene liked golfing and working outside in his yard and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and New York Giants. Most of all, Gene was a devoted husband, father, and proud grandfather who enjoyed watching his grandchildren.
In addition to his beloved wife, Gene is survived by three sons, Steven Dion of New Britain, John Dion and his wife, Debra, of Colchester, James Dion and his wife, Michelle, of South Windsor; three daughters, Anne Dion of Manchester, Alice Ivy and her husband, Michael, of Guilford, Carol Mawhinney and her husband, David, of Old Saybrook; a brother, Edmund Dion of Middletown; thirteen cherished grandchildren, Paul Lapinski and his wife, Meagan, of Coventry, Laura Ivy, Julianne Ivy, John Ivy, and Metages Ivy all of Guilford, Jesse Dion, Dale Dion, and Derek Dion all of Colchester, Jack Mawhinney, Sean Mawhinney, and Jason Mawhinney all of Old Saybrook, Tyler Dion and Matthew Dion both of South Windsor; many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Funeral service will be Monday (December 31st) with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 am at Our Lady of Peace Church of St. Edmund Campion Parish, 370 May Road, East Hartford. (The Dion family has asked that everyone please go directly to the church on Monday morning). Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, (Section 2), Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury. Gene’s family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday (December 30th) from 2 – 5 pm at the D’ESOPO-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford.
